Foundations of Herbalism Professional Herbalism Course - Fire Module
Our Professional Herbalism Classes through the Mid-Atlantic School of Herbalism at Smile can be taken as a continuous year-long course leading on to the second year of the Professional Herbalism course or taken separately as a one day or weekend course for Continuing Education credit (AHG) or simply for interest’s sake.

West African Drumming
Discover the drumming tradition of the Ashanti people of Ghana. Join Kofi Nana Frimpong, a renowned dummer with over 25 years of experience, for a journey into the healing modality of dynamic rhythm. Nana will teach drumming skills, African history and story, African instruments, and meditations for healing the mind and body through drumming. Students will be guided in a coordinated drum circle and learn the skills to drum well and have fun while doing it. No experience necessary. We will provide drums, but feel free to bring your own if you have them!

Monthly Plant & Mushroom ID Walk
Join Jared, acupuncturist and naturalist, for an engaging and interactive ID (identification) walk where we will focus on learning our native mushrooms and native plants! We will start out at Smile and take a wander through our local walking trails and local woods. Come learn about our Natural Neighbors! Please be prepared for a gentle walk through nature, remembering to bring along water, a small collection basket, bug spray, and any other essentials you might need.

Community Mugwort Harvest
This day is the 5th day of the 5th lunar month - an ancient traditional day to harvest Mugwort. Come one, come all, for our annual harvest of the Mugwort herb, a spectacular and widely used medicinal plant. Mugwort is used for many things - as an herb to help with dream work; as a medicinal tea for a variety of ills; and it can also be prepared into Moxa, a loose herb that is burned to warm and stimulate acupuncture points as well as various injuries. We will have a short talk about Mugwort, its history of use and its properties, and then we will engage in some community harvesting of this lovely plant! Mugwort tea will be available to sip on.

This class will cover where essential oils come from, how they are made, and the profiles of 8 of the most versatile, important, and economical essential oils as well as how essential oils are best used and why, essential oil safety, dos & don’ts, and easy recipes! Moxa Seminar: Preparing Mugwort
Mugwort is used for many things - as an herb for dream work; as a medicinal tea for a variety of ills; and also prepared as Moxa, a loose herb that is burned to warm and stimulate acupuncture points as well as various injuries and aches. We will discuss the Mugwort plant, its history of use and its properties. Various ways to utilize Moxa, as well as different conditions that Moxa is used for will be discussed. This is the full class on how to prepare the Mugwort herb into Moxa. Mugwort is traditionally harvested only two days of the year, and we will have a free harvesting event on the second of these days, Monday June 18th.

Join professional herbalist Joe Granger as he guides you through the basics of Chinese medicine. This class will discuss such Chinese medicine fundamentals as Yin, Yang, Chi, and how the qualities and energies of certain herbs affect each person in unique and powerful ways. Students will take away from this class a basic understanding of the principles of Chinese medicine and formulas that support wellness and longevity for every body.

This is a class for beginners to help inspire and ignite a spark towards wellbeing in your everyday tea rituals. Learn about the history and traditional uses of a teas and some of Lauren's favorite staple herbs, as well as her philosophy on blending the two. Your tea cup awaits, your dreams are for the taking and your body, spirit and soul will thank you with every sip. Each student will leave with a few recipes to try blending on their own as needed, in addition to 1oz of tea blended during the class.

Art is a powerful healing modality. Join Teaching Artist Bonnie Parry and explore the process of art making to awaken your innate healing abilities. You will help make (and take home!) a healing salve as well as a whole packet of salve and ointment recipes for you to make on your own!

Energetics & the Soul of Essential Oils
Learn a heart-centered, expansive approach to using the energetic properties of essential oils to influence the healing and balance of the mind, body, and heart connection. Explore using your new-found knowledge to create deeply personal blends for use with loved ones or professionally with in-class practice. Students will hand-craft an Anointing oil, Purifying Bath salt, Aromatherapy Inhaler, and an additional blend based on your needs. Discover chakras (the energy centers of the body), different personal techniques for choosing essential oils for energetic blends, using essential oils to shift vibrational patterns, meditations on the energetic properties of essential oils, diagnosing energetic imbalances, and more! Students will discover chakras, learn the vibrational and energetic properties of essential oil, experience an essential oil meditation, diagnose energetic imbalances and craft deeply personal blends for individual healing. Students will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the class.

Crystal Wire-Wrapping 101 Workshop
Discover simple jewelry making techniques in this hands-on Crystal Wrapping 101 Class using copper and crystals. Learn a few common and not so common known benefits of copper, the metaphysical properties of certain crystals, and what happens when the two are combined and are worn on the body. Techniques for making a pendant or ring will be shared. All materials will be provided to create your jewelry from our crystal selection or you may bring your own!

Herbal Creams & Salves
Have you ever wanted to learn how to make folk medicines like balms to help heal the skin and soothe sore muscles, or create your own elegant creams to support and nourish a glowing complexion? This is a class for you! Learn how to infuse wonder, intention and medicinal herbs into hand crafted skincare products for the whole family. Each student will leave with a jar of salve & cream (created in class), as well as a few recipes to try on their own. Can't wait to create with you!
