Foundations of Herbalism Professional Herbalism Course - Fire Module
Our Professional Herbalism Classes through the Mid-Atlantic School of Herbalism at Smile can be taken as a continuous year-long course leading on to the second year of the Professional Herbalism course or taken separately as a one day or weekend course for Continuing Education credit (AHG) or simply for interest’s sake.

Mugwort is used for many things - as an herb to help with dream work, as a medicinal tea for a variety of ills, and prepared as Moxa, a loose herb that is burned to warm and stimulate acupuncture points as well as various injuries. We will discuss the Mugwort plant, its history of use and its properties. Various ways to utilize Moxa, as well as different conditions that Moxa is particularly good for will be discussed.

Healing Yourself Through Art
Art is a powerful healing modality. Join Teaching Artist Bonnie Parry and explore the process of art making to awaken your innate healing abilities. Topics covered will include: overcoming common blockages to creativity, how art can help express thoughts, feelings and emotions, and the freedom that comes from creative expression. A variety of painting and collage activities will be explored. No artistic experience necessary. All supplies included in the price of the class.

Introduction to Tea
Whether you have never enjoyed a cup of loose leaf tea or you are a connoisseur of many years, you are welcome to join tea expert Christine Gordon for an exploration into the world of that simple leaf, Camellia sinensis. Students will learn where the tea plant comes from, how they are made and how to brew them properly. Tea culture will also be discussed as well as some of the subtle details that are guaranteed to enhance your love of fine teas. Come prepared to taste and learn, but the pearls are optional.

Brewing Herbal Wines & Meads
Brewing wines and meads is an ancient art. In its vast history, brewing alcohol has ranged from the practical to the illegal, from the profane to the sacred. In this class, we will learn tried and true techniques for making wines and meads the easy way. Using locally-harvested wild and cultivated herbs, we will design and create custom recipes as well as ancient recipes that you can replicate in your own kitchen. This class will focus on simple to medium scale brewing, and participants can immediately put the knowledge to use at home.

This is a class for students who already have some medicine making experience. We will learn advanced medicine making techniques, including herbal tinctures, liquid extracts using a percolation cone, and ethyl-oil extractions. Everyone will get to take home a sample tincture made during class.
