Foundations of Herbalism Professional Herbalism Course - Fire Module
Our Professional Herbalism Classes through the Mid-Atlantic School of Herbalism at Smile can be taken as a continuous year-long course leading on to the second year of the Professional Herbalism course or taken separately as a one day or weekend course for Continuing Education credit (AHG) or simply for interest’s sake.

Free Reiki Share for Reiki Practitioners
Smile Herb Shop is now holding Reiki Shares for Reiki Practitioners on the 1st Tuesday of every month. If you are a Usui Reiki Practitioner, this event is open for you to come together in community for practice and for the self-care that healers often forgo receiving. A wise healer is one who receives as well as gives.

Crystal Wrapping 101
Discover simple jewelry making techniques in this hands-on Crystal Wrapping 101 Class using copper and crystals. Learn a few common and not so common known benefits of copper, the metaphysical properties of certain crystals, and what happens when the two are combined and are worn on the body. Techniques for making a pendant or ring will be shared. All materials will be provided to create your jewelry from our crystal selection or you may bring your own.

Mushroom Cultivation 101
This workshop will explore the mushroom life cycle, types of mushrooms, basic cultivation skills and concerns, and 3 easy methods of cultivation. The class is hands on and participants will walk from this course with an Oyster kit, the knowledge of how to produce Oyster kits en masse, how to get further ‘mileage’ out of old mushroom kits by creating garden beds, and how to inoculate logs and stumps. Come one, come all, and bring your friends! Freshly brewed Chaga or Reishi mushroom tea will be available, but bring your own snacks and lunch.

Energetics of Herbalism: Knowing Plants & People
Have you ever felt overwhelmed by all the information about herbs that is available, and how to find the right herbs for you? Many people take the approach of ‘kitchen sink’ herbalism, and start taking every single herb that has ever been mentioned for a particular condition. The problem with this approach is that we are all unique- an herb that helps, for example, with stress for one person may not help for stress in another because they experience that stress differently. One person may feel hot, irritated stress, while the other feels cold, sad stress; they clearly need very different herbs to help support them. All traditional systems of healing have a system at their core for how to understand plants and assess people based on what we call energetics & constitution. The concept of Energetics within the context of Traditional Western Herbalism provides a framework for understanding how imbalance/illness may manifest within certain patterns of hot, cold, damp, or dry, and how to understand the actions of herbs within those patterns in the human body. In this class, clinical herbalist Betsy Miller will teach about how to recognize energetic patterns in people, and how to discover the tastes and energetics of plants as a way to fit the right herb to the person to optimize their health and wellness.

First Aid Boot Camp
This Herbal First Aid ‘Boot Camp’ is not for mere scrapes and bruises. Mugwort Harvesting Festival (Free Community Event!)
This day is the 5th day of the 5th lunar month - an ancient,traditional day to harvest Mugwort. Come one, come all, for our annual harvest of the Mugwort herb, a spectacular and widely used medicinal plant. Mugwort is used for many things - as an herb to help with dream work, as a medicinal tea for a variety of ills, and it can also be prepared into Moxa, a loose herb that is burned to warm and stimulate acupuncture points as well as various injuries. We will have a short talk about Mugwort, its history of use and its properties, and then we will engage in some community harvesting of this lovely plant! Mugwort tea will be available to sip on.
