Foundations in Herbalism: The Season of Winter/Water Weekend 2
Come and join our Foundations of Herbalism Certification through the Mid-Atlantic School of Herbalism at the Smile Herb Shop. This certification course is taught in executive format, one (1) weekend (Saturday & Sunday, 10 am-5 pm) each month (except August). Assignments and study between classes are required with some online content. A study group via web-conference is available once a month between classes. Classes are recorded, so if missed can be made up. The one-year program leads to a Foundations of Herbalism Certificate. For those who are interested in clinical practice, students can continue on for a second year of study to gain a Professional Herbalism Certification. This advanced course also consists of 1 weekend a month, over a period of 12 months with the final 6 months, being a clinical component. If both years are completed with accompanying assignments and case studies, students receive a Diploma of Clinical Therapeutic Herbalism.

The Female Reproductive System & Herbal Pediatrics
In this class, we’ll be covering herbal actions such as female hormonal regulators, galactagogues, uterine tonics and astringents such as Red Raspberry Leaf, Vitex, Shatavari and Dong Quai which normalize function and strengthening the whole system. We’ll also look at herbal blends for female issues often seen in the earlier years such as dysmenorrhea, irregular periods, infertility, pregnancy and endometriosis. Finally, we’ll finish off the days by looking at specific remedies for children. We’ll formulate herbal blends that target common conditions such as colic, teething, colds and fevers and figure out ways to make herbs taste good enough so that kids want to take them!

The Female Reproductive System, The Later Years
On January 6th, we’ll focus on the mature woman and look at dietary and lifestyle solutions aa well as specific phyto-steroidal and female regulating herbs such as Kudzu, Maca and Black Cohosh. We’ll also look at herbal blends used for conditions that are commonly seen in older women such as vaginal infections and dryness, fibroids, peri-menopausal and menopausal issues including weight gain, memory loss and thyroid dysregulation.

West African Drumming
Discover the drumming tradition of the Ashanti people of Ghana. Join Kofi Nana Frimpong, a renowned drummer with over 25 years of experience, for a journey into the healing modality of dynamic rhythm. Nana will teach drumming skills, African history and story, African instruments, and meditations for healing the mind and body through drumming. Students will be guided in a coordinated drum circle and learn the skills to drum well and have fun while doing it. No experience necessary. We will provide drums, but feel free to bring your own if you have them!

Undo Stress Yoga Class
Working at a desk all day? Sitting in a chair studying for hours? Always on the go without taking a moment to breathe deep or practice self-care? Come and take time for yourself on the mat during this gentle and mindful Hatha yoga class. Steadily build strength while connecting the mind, body, and breath. Everyone from beginners to intermediate practitioners will enjoy this class.

Traditional Hatha Yoga
This class will incorporate all the traditional methods used by yogis to achieve single-minded focus. Class will consist of mantra chanting*, pranayama, sun salutations. Additionally, asanas will be carefully selected to improve your postural alignment, digestive functioning, mental conditioning to reduce anxiety and or depression. Some experience in yoga will be helpful. Please be assured that *mantra chanting is not religious in nature yet it is intended to creates spiritual vibrational sounds.

Foundations of Herbalism - The Male Reproductive System
Men of all ages are the focus of today’s class as we focus on herbs to nurture the Male Reproductive system such as Saw Palmetto, Damiana & Nettle root. We’ll be going over conditions such as benign prostatic hypertrophy, prostatitis, low libido and general male tonics to boost energy and endurance. The class includes recipes and samples of Ginseng and Withania stamina snack balls and Damiana and Sarsaparilla longevity tonic.

Foundations of Herbalism - The Urinary System & Hydrotherapy Workshop
In accordance with classic Western Herbalism which links the kidneys with the reproductive systems of men & women, this class will cover common urinary conditions for both sexes. Beginning with introduction to the urinary system, herbal actions and herb profiles for these systems will be examined including such favorites as Cranberry, Uva Ursi, Marshmallow, Couch Grass and Corn Silk. We will cover urinary infections, incontinence and interstitial cystitis. We will finish up the day with the age-old techniques of hydrotherapy including therapeutic sitz baths, steams, foot soaks and inhalations. The historical methods still work wonders for everything from blocked sinuses, BPH, fibroids, chest infections and skin issues.

Cold-Process Soap Making with Lauren
Have you ever wanted to learn how to make your own soap? If so this class is for you!!! Come learn about the art of soap making. This class will give you a beginner’s understanding on the Cold Process soap method designed to teach students to make soap by hand at home. This class will include safety, lye calculations, a cold process soap demonstration and each student will leave with a bar of soap as well as notes and ideas on beginning their own soap making adventure. The objective of this class is to have students understand saponification values and be comfortable creating their own soap recipes at home.
