Foundations of Herbalism Professional Herbalism Course - Air Module
Our Professional Herbalism Classes through the Mid-Atlantic School of Herbalism at Smile can be taken as a continuous year-long course leading on to the second year of the Professional Herbalism course or taken separately as a one day or weekend course for Continuing Education credit (AHG) or simply for interest’s sake.
October 7-8, November 4-5, December 2-3 2017 from 9am-5pm

October 7-8: The Respiratory System & EENT (Ears, Eyes, Nose, Throat)
November 4-5: The Nervous System
December 2-3: The Skin & Lymphatic System; Paediatrics
West African Drumming
Discover the drumming tradition of the Ashanti people of Ghana. Join Kofi Nana Frimpong, a renowned dummer with over 25 years of experience, for a journey into the healing modality of dynamic rhythm. Nana will teach drumming skills, African history and story, African instruments, and meditations for healing the mind and body through drumming. Students will be guided in a coordinated drum circle and learn the skills to drum well and have fun while doing it. No experience necessary. We will provide drums, but feel free to bring your own if you have them!

Monthly Mushroom & Plant ID Walk
Join Jared, acupuncturist and nature enthusiast, for an engaging and interactive ID walk where we will focus on learning our native mushrooms and native plants! We will start out at Smile and take a wander through our local walking trails and local woods. Come learn about our Natural Neighbors! Please be prepared for a gentle walk through nature, remembering to bring along water, a small collection basket, bug spray, and any other essentials you might need.

Free Reiki Share for Reiki Practitioners
Smile Herb Shop is now holding Reiki Shares for Reiki Practitioners on the 1st Tuesday of every month. If you are a Usui Reiki Practitioner, this event is open for you to come together in community for practice and for the self-care that healers often forgo receiving. A wise healer is one who receives as well as gives. *Pre-Requisite: If you have not received Reiki training from Olivia MacMillan, please be sure to bring your Usui Reiki certificate to show the facilitator. This is for Reiki Practitioners only. Donations will be accepted on behalf of Smile Herb Shop for the space.

Foundations of Herbalism - The Nervous System
The true Body-Mind connection is most evident in the Nervous System. If we are what we eat, do we not become what we think? A well-functioning nervous system creates a calm mind, and herbal tonics, relaxants and nervines have often paved the way for a relaxed manner & good night’s sleep. We will explore such herbs as St. John’s Wort, Valerian, Kava and Jamaican Dogwood for anxiety, insomnia, and the blues.

WEBINAR: Handmade Holidays: Creative Herbal D.I.Y. Gifts
Join Olivia MacMillan for an evening discovering how the best gifts are often the simplest, most useful, and economic kind of giving. Olivia will take students on a festive guide to creative gifts for a variety of D.I.Y. skill levels including unique and clever packaging ideas. Some of the recipes Olivia will be sharing are: Honey Bee Face Masque, Fireside Chai Cordial, Holiday House Spray, and more!

Natural Perfume Blending for Beginners
Join natural perfumer Olivia MacMillan for this whole day event not to be missed. Explore the history of perfume, famous perfume anecdotes, two ways to make natural perfumes, scent notes and how to blend effective scent accords. Students will have access to essential oils and pure, luxury absolutes like: lavender, oakmoss, lotus, jasmine, honeysuckle, rose, and so very many more. Students will craft a perfume masterpiece to take home.

Herbal Cordials, Vinegars, & Cocktails
Herbal cordials and vinegar extraction have a long and rich history of practice across many traditions of herbal medicine, and are delicious ways to incorporate more of the healing magic of plants into your diet on a regular basis. Join herbalist Betsy Miller to learn how to make your own herbal vinegars, including fire cider and strawberry rose shrubs, as well as herbal cordials with elderberries and fruits. We will also learn how to use our vinegars, as well as other ingredients such as syrups and bitters, to craft delicious and healthful herbal cocktails (yes, cocktails can be medicine too!). This class is interactive, with tasting, blending and potion making!

Foundations of Herbalism - The Skin & Lymphatic System; Paediatrics
Last but not least, we’ll focus on the Skin and Lymphatic systems. We seem to forget that our skin is our largest organ and often needs tending! It protects us from hot & cold, chemicals, light and micro-organisms, so let’s treat it well. Classic Diaphoretic & Lymphatic herbs to assist in elimination include Red Clover, Calendula, Yellow Dock & Burdock. We’ll also look at blends for psoriasis, eczema, burns and wounds.
