Yohimbe bark is obtained from a small evergreen tree that grows in west Africa. For centuries, the bark has been used to make infusions and decoctions and in recent decades has become a popular over-the-counter supplement. The active constituent in the bark is an alkaloid known as yohimbine, the standardized form of which is yohimbine hydrochloride.
Powdered yohimbe bark is traditionally used to make tonics and infusions. In recent years, the herb has come into popular use as an herbal aphrodisiac.* However, because these alkaloids are known to increase heart rate and blood pressure, consult a qualified health care practitioner before using this herb.
