This organic Hawthorn supplement contains the leaves, flowers, and berries of organic Hawthorn, which contain a variety of bioflavonoids; potent antioxidants that appear to be primarily responsible for the cardiac actions of the plant.
Hawthorn has been used for a millennia as both a food and a medicine. The current use of Hawthorn for heart support dates back to the 17th century, where an Irish doctor was known to have secretly used it for the heart. After his death in 1894, his daughter revealed the famous cure to be a tincture of the ripe berries. Hawthorn had a brief period of use in the American clinical practice between the turn of the century and the 1930's. Initially, Hawthorn berries were the principal part used medicinally, but currently it is believed that the flowers and leaves are also beneficial.
Despite the emerging studies, researchers have not been able to attribute its use to one specific constituent marker. In fact, there are a couple of different markers available in standardized extracts commercially. We believe that the whole herb contains many constituents that work together - as nature intended.

- Hawthorn is the perhaps the most important herb for modern America. I have found it invaluable in dealing with our epidemic levels of heart disease in this country. Extracts from this attractive tree have been shown to have positively iontropic and positively chronotropic effects. Translation: Hawthorn helps the heart to beat stronger, and to regulate its rhythm. This combination of effects helps it to do more with less, thus making the most important muscle in the body function more efficiently. I like to think of it as an adaptogen for the heart, improving its ability to adapt to stress, protecting against damage. It also has been shown to increase coronary blood flow and to have hypotensive effects, and in Europe it is commonly prescribed by physicians for mild hypertension and the early stages of congestive heart failure. Hawthorn is also used as a tonic for the nerves and for improvement of mood.' - Nick Becker.
