• If you're going to use Goldenseal, use it properly, and know where it comes from! The explosion of this herb as a panacea has led to overharvesting that brought it to the brink of extinction, but the efforts of conservationists luckily kept this precious medicine from going the way of the dodo. Luckily the good folks at Oregon's Wild Harvest get all theirs from their own organic farm, so I feel comfortable recommending this product. I do use Goldenseal in acute respiratory infections, but not until the tail end. My general indication for Goldenseal in relation to colds and flus is to start taking it on the first day that, when you wake up, you feel a little better than you did the previous day. We're talking passive congestion here, not active inflammation. In the same way it is useful for the cloudy urine experienced after a UTI. In Michael Moore's language, goldenseal helps to 'resolve the exudate' and clean up the 'battle trash' left over from fighting infections. Yes berberine is a potent anti-microbial agent, but unless you're taking 20 grams a day, you're not getting anywhere near the doses used in the studies, and you're going to experience intense, uncomfortable dryness. Not to mention you'd be consuming the roots of 10 whole goldenseal plants, which is one of most scarce and expensive herbs around! Goldenseal is also incredibly useful for stuffy nose and clogged sinuses, respiratory infection or not. The great thing about it is that in all of these cases, it's not just helping with the symptoms, but providing long term tonification to the tissues that have been damaged. In general you don't want to use this plant in very high dose, 1 cap 3 or 4 times a day is good, more may cause irritation.'
