Iodine Support for a Healthy Thyroid

iodine and potassium and is intended to support a healthy thyroid
function.
A trace element, iodine is an essential component of thyroid hormones.
These hormones regulate numerous important biochemical reactions,
including protein synthesis and enzymatic activity, and are critical
determinants of metabolic activity.
They are also needed for healthy skeletal and central nervous system development in fetuses and infants.
Iodine can take several chemical forms, including sodium and
potassium salts, inorganic iodine, iodate, and iodide, the reduced form
of iodine.
Iodine most regularly occurs as a salt, so it is referred to as iodide.
Iodide is rapidly and almost totally absorbed in the stomach and duodenum.
And when it enters circulation, the thyroid gland concentrates it in
appropriate levels for thyroid hormone synthesis. Your body excretes the
remainder in urine.
Potassium iodide is used to help with an overactive thyroid, or
hyperthyroid, as well as with chronic respiratory conditions, to thin
mucus.
Potassium iodide may also help reduce the risks of some of the damaging effects of radiation.
The thyroid gland is one of the most sensitive organs to radiation. A
nuclear event can, for example, release radioactive iodine into the
air, which your thyroid will absorb once it enters your body.
Taking potassium iodide pills may temporarily block your thyroid from
absorbing radioactive iodine. This may reduce the risk of health
effects related to radiation down the road.
